The world has become more dynamic due to borderless trade and travel, a 24/7 instant news cycle, and inexpensive mass communications and social media. These complex trends bring challenges along with significant opportunities. Rapid transformations among private and public sector agencies have raised concerns about safeguarding the world’s cultural and linguistic diversity in the face of globalisation.
In the opening address to the debate in the UN General Assembly on 12 June, H.E. Dr. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, President of Indonesia, as the Co-Chair of the High-level Panel of Eminent Persons on the Post-2015 Development Agenda, expressed his strong committment to exploring in-depth the nexus between culture and development in the post-2015 Development Agenda. In this context, the World Culture Forum in Bali, 24-27 November 2013, aspires to create a space to discuss, debate, and contest established ideas and approaches.
We acknowledge the strategic role of the power of culture in sustainable development. The World Culture Forum is envisaged as an arena for sharing experiences, strengthening meaningful relationships, appreciating cultural diversity and fostering policies that enable local and national cultural communities to flourish in an age of unprecedented globalisation.
