800 Soldiers to Become Math Teachers

As many as 800 soldiers from the Jayakarta Military District Command will receive special training to become mathematics teachers in the Greater Jakarta region.

The training is part of the “Jakarta Loves Math” program, supported by the Surya Institute, which began on Tuesday.

Jayakarta Military District Commander Maj. Gen. Waris said Tuesday the Indonesian Army intended to participate in the effort to help support education across the nation.

“This is a moral movement. We want to participate in creating the best generation,” Waris said in Jakarta as quoted by kompas.com.

Surya Institute founder Yohannes Surya said the selected soldiers would receive training in mathematics and communications to teach students.

The first training sessions were held on Tuesday and will be followed up by further instruction beginning on Jan. 11.

“Working with soldiers is very effective because they are known as being highly disciplined,” Yohannes said.
