Preparation Made as Mt. Ijen on Level 3 Alert

The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has prepared for the worst as Mt. Ijen in Bondowoso, East Java alert status is on level 3 out of 4.

Three villages – Kali Anyar, Kali Gedang and Sumberejo- occupied by more than 18,000 residents, have been declared as areas prone to disaster.

Residents were also banned from “trespassing” in areas within 1.5 kilometers from the Mt. Ijen crater.

“The main danger is that if Mt. Ijen erupts hot, acidic water flowing with lahar. The water is also dangerous to drink,” BNPB official Syamsul Maarif said on Sunday.
