Education and Culture deputy minister Musliar Kasim said on Wednesday that the ministry would establish more vocational high schools (SMK) in Indonesia, so that they would exceed the total number of senior high schools (SMA) in the country.

He said that the plan was part of the ministry’s 2012 road map, and it would be funded by the 2012 state budget.

“As specified in our road map, we will multiply the number of SMKs. Our target is a ratio of 60:40 in comparison to SMA, but at the very least we should reach 50:50,” he said Wednesday, as quoted by kompas.com.

New vocational schools would not only include those in the common fields of automotive engineering and electronics, but would also include wider fields such as culinary arts and fashion, he said.

The purpose of the initiative, Musliar said, was not only to improve the image of vocational high schools, but also to produce more reliable and skilled workers.

He added that the establishment of the schools would take into account the needs and potential of its immediate surroundings to ensure that the students skills were able to be put to immediate use upon graduation.

“I think that in the future, more people will be interested in SMKs. If we look at restaurants and hotels, a lot of them are using the services of SMK graduates,” he said.
