Speaking at the Asia Tourism Forum 2012, organized by Bandung School of Tourism at Merdeka building, Wiendu said: "Tourism is often accused of being a factor that contaminates the local culture, but the accusation is not actually true."

She said that if the tourism was planned and managed properly, it would help in maintaining the preservation of the local culture.

Wiendu, who is also a professor of architecture and tourism planning at the Gajah Mada University, added that culture was not permanent but continued to change with the people who adhered to it.

"Culture changes continuously and is reproduced by the next generation," she noted.

According to Wiendu, the opportunities offered by tourism can be used by the local community to promote its culture.

She pointed out that cultural tourism could encourage the local community to revive the local culture and traditions.

"The main aim of holidaymakers has always been to experience, to feel, and to enjoy different cultures and traditions in different places," Wiendu explained.
