British Council supports RI′s economic creativity

The British Council has expressed its commitment to increase its role in supporting the development of various creative economic sub-sectors in Indonesia during the next five years.


British Council Arts Director Graham Sheffield made the commitment at a meeting with Indonesia Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Mari Elka Pangestu in London recently, said Ni Wayan Firi Adriyani, head of the ministry’s foreign cooperation bureau on Wednesday.

At the meeting they discussed a wide range of issues related to efforts to increase cooperation in developing the creative economic sector, particularly Indonesia’s fashion and film industries.

Mari praised the British Council for its role in assisting in the development of the Indonesian fashion industry.

“The British Council has assisted in the development of creative entrepreneurs in the fashion sector over the past few years, which has successfully increased the production form Indonesian designers at an international level,” Mari said.

She also expressed her hope that the British Council will support the development of other creative economic sub-sectors, which have become  a focus of its cooperation with the Indonesian government.

Realizing the importance of developing the Indonesian creative economy, the British Council will assign a creative economic expert to work from its representative office in Jakarta, Adhiyani added.

The creative economic expert will bridge the interests of those parties in Indonesia and Great Britain, she said.

During her stay, Mari also visited Tech City UK, and institution under the Great Britain government which assists start-up companies engaged in media and information technology.

Further, she visited OXO2 Creative Center and a number of creative industrial centers in Great Britain.
